The Boys & Girls Club of Brookings' 15,000-squarefoot $2.2 million Teen Center opened on Tuesday, May 26, 2015. The $2.2 million center, which is a remodeling of the former Peace Lutheran Facility, is across 12th Street South from the Club and has more than 200 teenage members, with 70 to 80 visiting the club every day.
The Teen Center was designed with direction from the Club's teen youth. The Teen Center features many different areas for club members to hang out, including a main gym area and gaming area, which includes a pool table and ping-pong table. The building includes a STEAM learning area, with STEAM standing for science, technology, engineering, arts, and math. In the area, teens have the resources they need for learning, discovering, and inventing.
The Teen Center also has multiple workforce development programs that partner with local businesses with the goal of retaining more young people in Brookings. Teens didn't get the swimming pool or bowling alley they suggested, but their space includes a gym, study areas, offices, snack bars, and an outdoor area for playing basketball.
